Rogersville is one of Tennessee’s oldest towns, settled in 1775 near the spring that still bears the Crockett name and later chartered around Joseph Rogers’ tavern on the Great Stage Road. Its National Register historic district still holds the state’s first newspaper press, first post office, one of its oldest courthouses still in use, and the Hale Springs Inn, which hosted three U.S. presidents.
Heritage Days began in 1978 as a harvest festival to preserve that story, and it has grown into a street festival that typically draws 20,000 to 40,000 visitors, far more than the town itself. Artisans, food, music, children’s activities, quilt and art shows, and living-history demonstrations fill the brick sidewalks and Federal-style storefronts.
It’s worth the trip: you get handmade goods and festival food in a downtown that actually looks like the 18th and 19th centuries it claims. Come for the candles, stay for the town.
