Materials Needed
• Paper, markers/pens, or a digital tool (free recommendations: Canva Concept Map templates, Lucidspark free tier, CmapTools, or Miro whiteboard).
• Access to your Week 4 videos.
• Optional: Mirror/phone camera for personal observation, printed diagrams, or a notebook for reflections.
Step 1: Warm-Up & Video Reconnection (10–15 minutes)
Re-watch or review key segments:
• “Every USELESS Human Organ Evolution Left Behind” (vestigial structures as echoes of the past).
• Bozeman Science “Coevolution” (ongoing blind pressures and relative adaptations).
• “What is the RNA World Hypothesis?” (chemistry as the foundation of life’s unfolding).
Quick journaling prompt:
Write 2–3 sentences: “My body feels like a historical document because…”
Step 2: Choose Your Body Part (5 minutes)
Select one to map. Suggestions:
• Beginner-friendly: Appendix, wisdom teeth, tailbone (coccyx), goosebumps, or ear muscles.
• Deeper dive: Hand/arm (fish-fin origins), spine (bipedalism), eye (inverted retina), or recurrent laryngeal nerve (nerve detour from fish ancestors).
Step 3: Research & Gather Insights (15–20 minutes)
Quickly note facts on your chosen part. Focus on:
• Ancestral function in earlier species.
• Evolutionary transitions (e.g., fish → tetrapods → mammals → humans).
• Current role and any imperfections (reduced function, issues, or inefficiencies).
• Examples of adaptation or exaptation (new uses built on old structures).
Helpful starting points:
• Recurrent laryngeal nerve: Loops around the aorta due to fish-gill ancestry and neck elongation—no clean shortcut possible. Classic example of constraint.
• Hand: Bones and digits trace to fish fins (see Tiktaalik transitional fossil).
• General vestigials: Appendix (once for plant digestion), wisdom teeth (larger jaws), coccyx (tail remnant).
Step 4: Build Your Evolutionary Concept Map (30–40 minutes)
Create a visual map with these elements:
Central Node: “My [Body Part] — e.g., Left Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve” (or draw a simple sketch of it on/in your body).
Main Branches (use lines/arrows for “paths”):
1. Current Form & Function — What it does today. Note any imperfections (e.g., vulnerability to issues, inefficiency, or reduced role).
2. Evolutionary History/Path — Timeline or lineage: Ancestral state → key transitions → today. Include deep time context (chemistry/RNA World foundations).
3. Imperfections — Vestigial aspects, trade-offs, or “blind” constraints (e.g., detour due to embryology/development).
4. Adaptations & “Corrections” — How evolution tinkered: repurposed old parts, incremental improvements, or new functions via exaptation. Highlight relative adaptation without perfect design.
5. Connections — Links to coevolution, other body systems, environment, or broader life processes.
6. Personal Layer — How it feels in your body today. Draw or note its location.
Use colors: One for paths (history), another for clearings (insights/imperfections vs. adaptations). Add images, fossils, or comparative diagrams if digital.
Example Starter for Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve:
• Center: Nerve path diagram (brain → down neck → loop around aorta → back up).
• Imperfection branch: Long detour (inches in humans, feet in giraffes) vs. direct fish-gill route.
• Adaptation: Still functions reliably; tied to heart/great vessel development.
Step 5: Guided Reflection (15–20 minutes)
Sit with your map and respond to these (write or speak aloud):
• Echoes of the Past: How does this part show incremental modifications rather than redesign?
• Ongoing Pressures: What does it reveal about blind, relative adaptation and the absence of final perfection or benevolence?
• Chemistry as Starting Point: How does tracing this back to deep evolutionary (or molecular) origins change your sense of wonder or embodiment?
• Personal Clearing: One insight this mapping gave you about struggle, persistence, or your physical self. What “path” feels clearer now?
Step 6: Share & Extend (Optional, 10+ minutes)
• Photograph your map and share in the grove (what surprised you?).
• Extension ideas: Map a second part next week, or compare yours to a partner’s. Research one fossil or gene connection. Revisit in movement (e.g., feel your tailbone while sitting).
Closing Reflection
Your body is not a finished product but a living archive of paths taken. Those are contingent, layered, and emergent from material reality. By mapping it, you’ve created a personal clearing amid the complexity of evolution. This practice honors the videos’ invitation: to see ourselves as shaped by long processes of mutual adaptation and chemical possibility.
