Wednesday Workshop 11: From Everyday Objects to Abstract Forms

Tools needed: Phone or computer (camera, notes app or simple sketch tool, free audio recorder like the built-in voice memo or Audacity), one everyday object you already own, and optionally a printed or digital image of one Grove subject (Acadian Flycatcher, Rosy Maple Moth, Allegheny Woodrat, Northern Hogsucker, Hepatica, or Tadpole Galaxy).
Norman shows that good design uses physical, semantic, cultural, and logical constraints + clear feedback so the correct action becomes obvious. The Grove posts show the same principle at work in evolution (specialized forms that make certain behaviors possible and others impossible) and in art (deliberate limits that free invention). You will deliberately impose tight constraints, force knowledge into the world rather than your head, abstract a real form, and add a simple sound layer — exactly the physicalist “transformance” the Magick Library frames.
Step-by-Step
1. Choose your source
Pick either:
One ordinary household object (lemon squeezer, wooden spoon, key, candle tin, safety pin, etc.), or
One of the Grove observatory subjects.
Photograph or sketch it quickly. Note 2–3 of its strongest “affordances” or evolutionary constraints (what it makes easy and what it prevents).
2. Impose three hard constraints (the Norman + art-ideas fusion)
Write them down so they live in the world, not just in your head:
Time or material limit (e.g., “only 15 minutes of drawing,” “only black + one accent color,” “only found paper scraps”).
Structural limit (e.g., “must use only geometric shapes derived from the original form,” “must fit inside a 4×4 inch square”).
Sensory limit (e.g., “must include one sound element that lasts ≤8 seconds”).
These constraints lower the stakes and force invention the same way physical and semantic constraints do in Norman’s examples.
3. Abstract the form
Starting from the realistic photo/sketch, transform it:
Turn organic curves into geometric planes (or vice versa).
Establish one clear center of interest and build supporting lines/shapes that lead the eye.
Keep only the essential “affordances” of the original (the part that does the real work) and discard the rest.
Goal: the final abstract still “explains itself” the way good design does — someone looking at it should sense what the original *could do* without needing a caption.
4. Add a minimal sound design layer
Record or source one short sound that responds to the abstract:
A single Foley-like action (scraping, clicking, fluttering paper, pouring).
Or a processed natural sound (a short clip of forest understory, water over stones, or even a quiet room tone).
Apply one intentional treatment only (pitch shift, reverse, layer with silence, or simple fade).
The sound should provide feedback or tension/release the way Norman’s visibility + feedback principles work — subtle, not loud. Listen once with eyes closed, once while looking at the abstract.
5. Document the conceptual model
In 4–6 short sentences or bullet points, answer Norman’s practical questions for your new piece:
What parts move / are fixed?
How is it meant to be held or approached?
What actions does it invite or forbid?
What feedback does the sound give?
This is the knowledge-in-the-world step: make the reasoning visible so a future you (or a single reader) can reconstruct it.
