A lifelong Appalachian, Lucian wasn’t a scientist by trade — he was a retired mechanic and farmer — but Annie often said he embodied the scientific spirit. “Appalachians are incredible stewards of the Earth,” she told him one evening. “Even with their love of old traditions, they’re practical and innovative when it comes to preserving the land.”
Lucian chuckled, shaking his head. “Don’t know about all that, Annie. I just do what needs doing.”
But Annie saw more. She admired how Lucian could fix just about anything with spare parts and ingenuity, how he knew the rhythms of the land as well as any ecologist. His deep respect for nature reminded her why she had chosen science in the first place — to understand and care for the world, even if it often felt like an uphill battle.
Science, Annie explained to Lucian, wasn’t all discovery and progress. “It’s hard,” she said. “Sometimes I feel like a failure. Lucian frowns, "But he seems so... alive." "That's the peril," Elias responds. "People can get lost in this illusion, treating robots as companions or even deities. They forget the distinction, which can distort their reality. That’s why we've decided to halt the pursuit of robotic consciousness. It's better to keep silicon devoid of self-awareness, strictly for serving human needs. Let nature retain the monopoly on true intelligence."
Despite their careful measures, rumors about Annie's team spread, igniting fear and misinformation. Politicians, leveraging fears of "soulless machines" and "godless science," file a complaint, leading to a government raid on Annie’s farm. Agents confiscate the robots and detain several team members.
Lucian, witnessing the absurdity, remarks, "They're treating Ponky like he's a criminal. But he’s just... an object."
Annie, shaken but resolute, reflects on the government's actions, "They're arresting tools. Calculators with limbs. It's absurdly alarming."
Summoned to a town meeting, Annie and her team face a wary crowd. They explain that their robots are meant to assist, not supplant, humans, detailing contributions to local farming, healthcare, and infrastructure that have enriched lives without undermining autonomy.
Lucian supports this view, recounting how the robots aided him in repairing his tractor and optimizing irrigation. "They're tools, not beings," he insists. "You don't arrest a hammer for performing its function."
The discussion expands to address the broader implications of government intervention and the separation of church and state. Annie's team shares experiences of financial sabotage, stalking, and military threats they've endured. They argue for a secular approach to science, which respects personal freedoms and drives innovation, contrasting this with religious overreach, which can lead to suppression and fear.
Annie states, "Separation of church and state doesn’t mean prohibiting religion. It ensures no single group — whether religious or secular — can impose its will on others through force. Coexistence should be free from coercion."
Inspired by the team's bravery, Lucian organizes a protest against local politicians. He emphasizes the beneficial impact of Annie’s work on the community, advocating for the protection of their rights. Gradually, more residents rally behind the "magickians," acknowledging their aid despite discomfort with the technology.
A local farmer admits, "I don't trust those machines; they seem unnatural. But Annie and her team have always been there when we needed them. That's more than I can say for the politicians."
By the end of the meeting, opinions shift. The community votes to release the robots and allow Annie's research to continue, now under public scrutiny for transparency. The ordeal fosters a deeper respect for individual rights and the ethical balance in scientific progress.
The government's suppression had forced Annie's team into a sort of hiding, which was detrimental to scientific advancement. They couldn't network or brainstorm openly as they needed to, stymieing their work. However, with the community now choosing to embrace the potential positive uses of technology and acknowledging the right to both religious and non-religious expression in Appalachia, a new chapter begins. Determining how much of Appalachia to allocate for the "magickians" remains a challenge, but it's clear they have a right to own property, just as their scientific endeavors are a form of intellectual property. Who's to say humans can't fly to the moon or cure cancer? Open science ensures that research remains transparent and deeply connected with the community, allowing everyone a chance to participate and stay informed about the innovations shaping their world.
Lucian concludes, "We don't have to agree on everything. But respecting each other's right to think, create, and live freely — that’s what strengthens a community."
Chapter 9 The Practitioner
The Buttercream Inn buzzed with the murmur of voices, the clink of glasses, and the gentle strum of Lucian's guitar. Seated near the crackling fireplace, his hat tipped back, Lucian wore a mischievous grin, ready to spin his tale. The room hushed, the audience leaning in, eager for the magic of his storytelling.
"This one," he began, "is about the magickians and their fool of a friend — me."
Lucian recounted his initiation into Annie's team, describing the wonder of watching them fuse science, art, and technology in ways that seemed almost mystical. "I thought I'd be the comic relief," he chuckled. "But I wasn't wrong."
He shared his first blunder with Annie's solar panel project. "I crossed a wire and shorted everything," he said, laughing. "Annie just said, 'That's the cost of learning.'"
Through mistakes and perseverance, Lucian found his niche, from repairing robots in the shop to helping design solar panel installations for old Appalachian homes. "With Annie's team," he noted, "perfection isn't the goal. Showing up to learn is."

He likened himself to the Fool in tarot, stepping off cliffs not out of fearlessness but trust in the journey. "Living wild and free isn't recklessness," he said. "It's about embracing the dream — risk, error, and growth."
Wrapping up, Lucian brought his story to the present, at the Jonesborough storytelling festival. He painted a picture of the engaged crowd, the laughter, and how the mountains seemed to listen.
"Annie and the team are here, somewhere," he said, glancing around. "Probably cooking up their next big thing. Me? I'm just the fool with a guitar, glad to be part of it."
He then played a song he'd written about the mountains, the magickians, and the joy of creating something real, the audience joining in with applause and song.
As night fell, Lucian and Annie sat by the fire. "Do you think we'll ever get everything right?" he pondered.
Annie smiled warmly. "No. But getting it right isn't the point. The point is to practice, to try, to build something meaningful, even if it's not perfect."
"To the practice," Lucian toasted, strumming his guitar.
