Norman Lens on Everyday (or Magickal) Things
Apply Norman’s key concepts (affordances, signifiers, mapping, feedback, constraints, conceptual models, discoverability, and the gulfs of execution and evaluation) to an ordinary object or a small design the participant creates. Then run a quick, structured usability test to see whether the design actually works for other people.
Observation & Mapping
Choose one everyday object you use regularly or a simple “physicalist magick” tool or ritual object you have been working with (a candle setup, card layout, habit tracker, custom interface, and so on). Photograph or sketch it.
Work through Norman’s principles directly on the object. Ask what it affords and which signifiers are present or missing. Evaluate how well the mapping connects controls to results. Note the feedback it gives and any constraints that guide correct use. Describe the conceptual model a first-time user is likely to form, and locate the gulfs of execution or evaluation.
From that analysis, form a clear hypothesis: “If I change X (add a clearer signifier, improve the mapping, or strengthen the feedback), then novice users will complete the intended action faster, with fewer errors, or with higher confidence.”
Design / Redesign
Produce a minimal improvement or an entirely new tiny design. Keep it cheap and fast: paper prototypes, rearranged physical layouts, simple labels, digital mock-ups, or a modified ritual object all work. Cardboard, tape, sticky notes, or free digital tools are enough.
Document the before-and-after versions and name the specific Norman principle(s) you targeted.
Usability Test
Recruit three to five people who are unfamiliar with both the original object and your redesign. Friends, family, online volunteers, or other lab participants are fine.
Give each person a realistic task, such as “Make this light the desired color,” “Set this up so the next person knows exactly what to do,” or “Complete the sequence without instructions.”
Observe or record without helping. Track time to successful completion, number of errors or wrong actions, moments of hesitation or verbal confusion, and final success rate. Ask a couple of brief post-task questions: “What did you think this did?” and “How confident were you?” Optionally invite them to think aloud while they work.
Chart the data simply: success rate, average time, error counts before versus after, or against the original design.
Analysis & Open-Source
Decide whether the redesign supported or falsified the hypothesis. Note which Norman principles proved most predictive and what still failed (and why).
Share the photos, the hypothesis, the raw observations or simple chart, and one clear takeaway in the same open-source spirit as the earlier Mad Lab posts: map the mechanics, test them, chart the results, and make the findings public.
