Week VIII Lab: Finding Scientific Articles on Enchanted Mechanics

We treat the three terms as research questions rather than beliefs:

  • Magick → non-mystic enchantment (the wonder that arises from real form and function)
  • Magic → the design of illusions (how discrepancy between appearance and process is engineered and measured)
  • Occultism → curiosity as method (how deliberate engagement with ignorance drives new knowledge)

Your task is to locate one solid scientific article for each, extract its core data or method, then design a small next step.

Step 1 — Find the papers

Search academic sources (Google Scholar, PubMed, JSTOR, arXiv, etc.) and locate:

  1. One peer-reviewed paper on non-mystic / secular enchantment, awe, or wonder generated by physical processes or scientific understanding.
  2. One peer-reviewed paper on the cognitive or perceptual design of illusions (stage magic, visual/auditory discrepancy, misdirection, etc.).
  3. One peer-reviewed paper on curiosity, the psychology or philosophy of ignorance, or knowledge-seeking as a structured practice.

Save the title, authors, year, and DOI or link for each.

Step 2 — Extract the working piece

For every paper, write only three short lines:

  • What was measured or observed
  • The key method or experimental design
  • The main quantitative or qualitative finding that relates to our term

Keep it tight. No full summaries.

Step 3 — Design the next data

Using the three extracted findings, sketch one minimal follow-up study or data schema that could sit at their intersection.

Specify:

  • The new question that links non-mystic enchantment, illusion design, and curiosity
  • The primary variables you would collect
  • How you would sample them
  • What would count as closing (or productively reopening) the gap

Closing

You now hold three real scientific anchors and one original data-design sketch that grows out of them.

That is the lab’s product.
