Week VI Lab: Test Your Hypothesis & Chart the Magic

Welcome back to our Real Magical Summer series!
Last week (Week V) you became the lead scientist: you observed something curious, asked a powerful question, and shaped it into a clear, testable hypothesis in the classic “If… then… because…” form. You planned materials, variables, and a fair test.
This week we cast the next spell in the scientific method: actually test it, gather real data, and turn those numbers into a simple chart so the results are easy to see, share, and build upon.
Charts are pure practical magick that transform messy notebook scribbles into a picture anyone can understand at a glance. And once you have that picture, we invite you to open-source it in The Commons forum on Jangled Jester so the whole community can learn from, replicate, or improve your experiment.
What Does “Testing a Hypothesis” Mean?
You change one thing on purpose (independent variable), measure what happens (dependent variable), keep everything else the same, and record the results. Then you look at the data and ask: “Does this support my prediction… or surprise me?”
Both outcomes are victories. Science advances either way.
Step-by-Step: Run the Experiment & Make the Chart
Step 1: Pull out last week’s mini lab page
Re-read your hypothesis. Make sure it is still safe, simple, and summer-friendly. Example from last week:
If the water is hotter, then the sugar will dissolve faster, because heat makes water molecules move quicker.
Step 2: Set up a fair, safe test
- Independent variable: the one thing you change (e.g., water temperature: cold / room / hot)
- Dependent variable: what you measure (e.g., seconds until sugar disappears)
- Constants: same amount of water, same amount of sugar, same stirring method, same cup size, etc.
- Materials: only what you already have at home or in the backyard. Adult supervision for anything hot or sharp.
Do at least 3 trials for each condition so random chance doesn’t trick you.
Step 3: Collect the data in a simple table
In your notebook (or a free Google Sheet / Airtable), make columns like this:

Write every number clearly. Take a photo of your setup if you like.
Step 4: Transfer the data into a chart
Turn the table into a visual so patterns jump out:
- Paper & colored pencils: bar chart or line graph works great.
- Digital (free & easy): Google Sheets → Insert → Chart. Choose bar or column chart.
- Label axes clearly (x-axis = what you changed, y-axis = what you measured). Give the chart a fun title: “Sugar Dissolving Speed vs. Water Temperature – Real Magical Summer Lab”.
Now anyone can see the story in seconds.
Step 5: Reflect like a true scientist
- Did the results support your hypothesis, partially support it, or surprise you?
- What would you change if you ran it again?
- How does this connect to earlier weeks (observation, questioning, nature, kitchen science…)?
Write 3–5 sentences in your notebook.
Step 6: Open-source it in The Commons
Science grows faster when we share. Take photos or screenshots of:
- Your original hypothesis
- The data table
- The finished chart
- A short reflection
Post them in The Commons forum on Jangled Jester. Title your post something like “Week VI Lab Results: [Your Topic] – Data + Chart”.
Invite others to try the same experiment, suggest improvements, or post their own versions. That is how a single backyard test becomes community knowledge—exactly the spirit of physicalist magick and the Digital Renaissance Fair.
