Week V Lab: Form Your Own Hypothesis

Turning Summer Curiosity into Real Scientific Magic

Welcome back to our Real Magical Summer series. If you’ve been following the other blogs, you know we’re not just passing time under the sun but turning buzzing bees, shifting shadows, melting ice cream, and backyard adventures into real, hands-on science that feels like pure enchantment.

In earlier weeks we sharpened our observation skills and practiced asking powerful questions. Now it’s time for the next spell in the scientific method: forming your own hypothesis.
This is where your curiosity gets a clear voice and turns into something you can actually test.

What Exactly Is a Hypothesis?

A hypothesis is your best educated guess about what will happen in an experiment. It’s not a wild guess but based on what you’ve already observed and what you already know. 

The best hypotheses are:
  • Testable (you can actually check it with an experiment)
  • Specific
  • Often written in the magical “If… then… because…” format

Quick Example

Observation: Sugar seems to disappear faster in my hot summer lemonade than in a cold glass.
Question: Does temperature affect how quickly sugar dissolves?
Hypothesis: If the water is hotter, then the sugar will dissolve faster, because the heat makes the water molecules move quicker and bump into the sugar more often.

Your Creative Practice: Design Your Own Hypothesis Experiment

This week you become the lead scientist. You get to choose the topic, create the hypothesis, and think about how you could test it. The only rule is to keep it safe, simple, and connected to summer (or to something we explored in previous weeks).

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Own Experiment

Step 1: Choose Your Topic

Look back at your notes from earlier weeks or notice something new this summer. Here are some inspiration starters: 
  • Something from nature (plants, shadows, insects, weather)
  • Kitchen or food science (melting, dissolving, fizzing, baking)
  • Play or movement (paper airplanes, bubbles, balls rolling)
  • Everyday summer objects (ice, sunscreen, water absorption, colors fading in sun)
Ask yourself: What did I observe? What question do I still have?

Step 2: Form Your Hypothesis

Turn your question into a clear prediction using this powerful template: “If I [change this one thing], then [this will happen], because [my reason based on what I know].”

Write it in your notebook. Be as creative as you like. There are no wrong hypotheses, only ones waiting to be tested.

Step 3: Plan a Simple Test

Think about how you could check your idea:


What will you change on purpose? (This is your independent variable) 
What will you measure or observe? (This is your dependent variable) 
What will you keep the same so it’s a fair test? 
What simple materials do you already have at home or in the backyard?

You don’t have to do the full experiment today, just planning it is powerful practice. But if it’s safe and easy, go ahead and try a small version.

Step 4: Write It All Down

Create your own mini lab page with:


Your observation or question 
Your hypothesis (in “If… then… because…” format) 
How you would test it 
What materials you would need 
What you predict might happen

Step 5: Reflect

After you write (or try) your experiment, ask: 

Does my hypothesis feel testable? 
What might surprise me? 
How does this connect to something we did in earlier weeks?

Even if you never run the experiment, just forming the hypothesis builds real scientific thinking, and that’s the real magic.
