Week IX Lab: Scientific Method Audit of a Personal Secular Practice

This laboratory applies the scientific method to one ordinary daily habit of physicalist magick. The aim is measurable improvement in consistency or insight through observable processes only. The work uses a phone and a free spreadsheet and takes place across four or five short sessions.
Selecting the Habit
Choose a single daily physicalist-magick habit you already practice or can adopt this week. Options include a Grove-style observatory session focused on a particular bird, insect, plant, or weather pattern for a set interval; mapping one ordinary household process completely onto form and function; or a skill from earlier Workshops such as documenting evolutionary adaptations nearby. Select something brief enough to perform reliably each day.
Framing the Question
Write a clear question about what still feels inconsistent or unclear in the chosen habit. Possible examples include whether attention wanders, whether insight arrives only sporadically, or whether the mapping of form and function stays shallow on some days. Phrase the question so it is understandable without prior knowledge of the fair.
Gathering Background
Collect a modest amount of relevant information. Draw on material from earlier weeks of the fair, a quick free search on attention, observation, or deliberate practice, or your own notes from previous labs. Limit yourself to what is already known or reasonably established about the physical processes involved. Avoid untestable speculation.
Forming the Hypothesis
From the background, write one testable hypothesis. State it so the outcome can clearly support or undermine the claim. A useful form is: “When I perform the habit under condition A rather than condition B, the measured clarity (or consistency, speed, or depth of insight) will increase by a detectable amount.” Keep the hypothesis narrow so only one variable changes.
Designing the Mini-Test
Plan a controlled comparison over four or five short sessions. A standard pairing is focused versus distracted conditions: one day complete the habit with phones silenced and interruptions minimized; another day allow ordinary distractions. Other possible variables include time of day, session length, or presence versus absence of a simple checklist. Keep every other factor as constant as possible.
Logging the Data
Immediately after each session record the date, the condition used, a quantitative measure such as seconds of uninterrupted attention, number of distinct physical mechanisms noted, or a rating from 1 to 10 for clarity and reproducibility, and a brief factual note of what occurred. Use phone notes or a free spreadsheet. After the final session, transfer the numbers into a simple chart that compares the conditions or shows change across days.
Analyzing the Results
Examine the data with standard scientific care. Did the numbers move in the direction predicted by the hypothesis? By how much? What possible confounds remain? Where did the results stay flat or reverse? Write a short conclusion limited to the evidence collected.
The Secular Layer
Throughout the process note moments when a non-secular or mystical framing would have stopped inquiry—by treating an outcome as predetermined, by introducing unfalsifiable claims, or by accepting subjective feeling as final proof. Record how staying with observable mechanical processes changed both the method and the outcome. That difference forms part of the data.
Sharing the Work
At the end of the five days prepare a concise summary that includes the original question, the hypothesis, a description of the conditions, the chart or key numbers, the conclusion, and one sentence on how the secular constraint shaped the work. Post it in the Commons or keep it as documentation for your own practice.
By the end of the week you will have a clearer personal habit and a concrete record showing that the scientific method applied to ordinary secular practice produces progressive, revisable understanding based on observable evidence.
