What is Physicalism?

Physicalism is the metaphysical thesis that everything is physical, meaning there is nothing over and above the physical, so the nature of the actual world conforms entirely to physical conditions. Key reflection points include how this view parallels ancient claims like Thales’ idea that everything is water or Berkeley’s idealism that everything is mental, while insisting that even biological, psychological, moral, social, or mathematical items ultimately reduce to or relate closely to the physical. It grew out of materialism but distances itself from older notions of inert matter, since modern physics includes forces like gravity that are physical yet not material in the traditional sense. In the philosophy of mind it supports reductionism by holding that everything can be explained within physics, raising questions about whether experiences like happiness, fear, or pain are themselves made of matter.

Physicalism asserts the general claim that everything is physical and is applied in the philosophy of mind to explain how the mind relates to the rest of the universe.
